What body weight tells you

Picking a Horse3 min

Each horse is weighed on race day and the change from its last run is published. Racehorses usually weigh 400–500 kg.

  • Changes of around ±5 kg are normal.
  • A change of 10 kg or more can signal a shift in condition.
  • Young horses naturally gain weight as they grow.
  • Best of all, compare with the weight at which the horse ran its best races.

In the parade ring, look for a shiny coat and calm behaviour.
