02Rating & weight
Ratings, classes and weight carried
A rating is an ability score built from past results; it rises with wins and falls with poor runs. Horses are grouped into classes by rating.
Weight carried includes the jockey and equipment. In handicap races, higher-rated horses carry more weight to level the field.
So read rating and weight together: the top-rated horse often carries the heaviest load. Also compare weight with its last race. Apprentice jockeys may receive a weight allowance.
